I recall hearing at the time of his death that Audie Murphy was inundated with business debts and was involved in questionable business dealings. I remember as well that there was considerable evidence to suggest that he orchestrated the crash of his plane in order to collect life insurance coverage for his outstanding debts. Not only did he apparently take his own life, but he took the lives of those traveling with him as well.

I realize how inflammatory such an allegation may seem, especially to his legions of fans and admirers, and I certainly hope there is no foundation for such an allegation. But the fact that there is no mention of the question whatsoever in any Web search I've done is extremely suspicious, particularly in light of the volume of speculation appearing in the press at the time. I see nothing but lauditory comments and appraisals of his legacy, which suggests that a monumental coverup and "sanitization" of the official record has taken place.
