He didn't go to school. His family had a small plantation in rural Virginia and he was an apprentice to a surveyor for a profession. He was a second son and couldn't inherit from his father so he needed a profession. Yet, his father died when he was about 11 and he lived with his older brother. As a young man he became a British officer in the French and Indian war, but he always felt inferior due to his lack of education.
