Historically speaking, armies are the oldest branch of military service. Armies are the oldest means of fighting a war. Land conflict being the oldest form of combat. The Phoneticians and Greeks and perhaps the Egyptians invented the second oldest form of military service, the navy. Galleys were used throughout the Mediterranean Sea for centuries before the first century AD.

The Navy and army were created in the same year each for different ways to protect.

The Navy was created in 1775 along with the Army created by the continental congress to enforce the sea. (Did they think about having an army first or navy first that is the question)

Think about it, if you were a starting country what branches would you start out with..today it would either be army and air force or army and navy.

The Marines were officially established on 10 November 1775 by the Continental Congress

In 1798, however, Congress established the Marine Corps as a separate service.

They would be the second oldest, air force the 3rd.
