18 years old and you have to have 20 dollars.
I would recommend not getting a checking account for your child until they are older. A good age to think about this would be around 16 or 17 years of age.
With a parent or guardian also on the account, a child can have a bank account at any age. They cannot, however, have a checking account.
Most banks have a minimum age of 18 to open a checking account with a parent or guardian. If you open a joint checking account with a parent or guardian, the minimum age is usually 13.
"The typical age requirement to open a checking account is eighteen years of age. However, it can go as high as twenty-one years of age depending on the state in which you live and the bank you are trying to open an account."
Like a lot of decisions this one should be based on their maturity and ability to understand managing the account. I would say 15 or 16 is a good age to start if they are ready to manage the account.
Some banks have different policies and procedures for checking accounts and the age at what they can be opened etc. RBC Bank for example in Champions Gate FL can open a checking account for a minor (min age 15 - though usually 16/17yrs) as a sole owner (no one else on the account) though a parent/guardian would need to sign a "parent/guardian indemnification" to allow this. Visa however have requirements that you must be 18 to have a Visa Check Card, though this can be avoided by using an ATM card instead.
18
13 or 12 it depends
I opened an account for my child (checking @ 15 years old, his name on checks not mine) and grandchild when they were only 6 months old. For no charge. It was a trust account but when they became of age I converted it over to them. Hope this helps silverpenny
"Starting a Rainier Pacific bank account is simple. All you need is to be at legal age, have an id, and a deposit to start your account. It is very simple and easy to do and I highly recommend it."
It can be in their name but you will have to be a co-signer on the account. You will have access to the account and will probably have to make any account changes for your child. Legally minors need someone of age such as a parent in order to open bank accounts.
First, be of legal age or you will need to take a parent or guardian with you. To start a checking account in most places, locate a bank you want to bank at. You should check around because various banks have different regulations and benefits. I.e., some banks have 'free checking' while others charge a fee for not keeping a 'minimum' balance,or they may charge various service fees. After shopping around, walk in the bank you select, and let any employee know that you want to open an account. Most will be happy to accept your money!
