At Washington's funeral, Robert E. Lee's father said that he was, "first in war, first in peace, and first in the heart of his country." Washington commanded the Continental Army throughout the Revolution and brought about the British surrender after years of conflict. He presided over the meeting of the Constitutional Convention that forged the Constitution of the United States, and he was elected the First President of the United States, serving two terms, after which he stepped down peacefully, when a faction of the country wanted him to seize the government and create a monarchy.
