In 1886, boat thieves stole Theodore Roosevelt's boat from his Elkhorn Ranch in the Dakota Territory. He and his ranch hands built a new boat and chased them downriver, catching up to them after a few days. Roosevelt, then a sheriff's deputy because of his role as President of the Medora Stockmen's Association, arrested the three thieves and marched them overland to Dickinson, ND, collecting a $50 reward for turning them in.
