Two things - Conflict and Suffering
Human history had been a struggle that spans our entire existence. The desire for humanity to achieve a comfortable life was borne out of the suffering and difficulties humanity encountered in each generation. Suffering causes demand, demand is requires solution, solution requires ingenuity, so it causes men to strive to make their lives better by progress, both technologically, socially and other stuff. So you are a cavemen freezing to death, so discover fire! So you are a Sumerian wanting to feed their first growing cities, so invent agriculture! So you are a scientist living in the Renaissance/Enlightenment and angry at your own ignorance while wanting to discover what goes on the world instead of listening Church doctrine, so invent the scientific method! So you are horrified by the Holocaust, so invent Human Rights! So you are afraid of the Russians with their big nukes, so invent BIGGER nukes that inevitably drives the Space Race and invents microwave, Computers and the internet in the process.
Progress is not something that just happens, it is that which arrives when you are tired of living one way and want something better in life. In other words, Progress is paved with the blood and suffering of millions and competition with others you don't like.
