What did Dwight Eisenhower do before world war 2?

In 1911, Dwight Eisenhower enrolled in West Point Academy and graduated in 1915 as a second lieutenant. He served in the infantry at various camps in Texas and Georgia until 1918. Within this time period he found time to be a football coach at St. Louis College, now St. Mary's University, in 1916.

During World War I, Eisenhower was temporarily given the title of Lieutenant Colonel in the National Army. During this time he trained tank crews, his first command, although his crews or tanks never saw action.

After the war he was given back his title of captain (although he was promoted to major a few days later) and assumed duties at Camp Meade until 1922. Eisenhower then became executive officer to General Fox Conner in the Panama Canal Zone until 1924.

In 1925-26 he attended Command and General Staff College where he graduated first in a class of 245 officers. He then went on to serve as a battalion commander at Fort Benning until 1927.

During this time of peace he held many positions such as being assigned to the American Battle Monuments Commission, executive officer to General MacArthur, and various staff positions in Washington DC, Texas, and California. He was promoted to brigadier general on October 3, 1941.

Before his presidency, Eisenhower served as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces during World War II. Eisenhower is most famous for the D-Day Invasion in Normandy, which he masterminded. This invasion is one of the main reasons the war ended earlier then most expected.

The successful landing in Normandy could not foretell whether the war would have ended earlier or later.

Certainly the length of the Second World War was dependent upon many factors. One certainty is, however, that if the US had entered the European theater later than 1941 and invaded Normandy later than 1944, the war would have lasted longer. The input of US troops played a large part of the war's length.
