All US bills printed from the late 1920 until the late 1980s have almost identical design themes on the front. A 1974 $50 bill has a small oval portrait of Ulysses S. Grant in the center of the front side. The number 50 appears in each corner of the bill and the edges are framed with ornate scrollwork.

The reverse has the familiar portrait of the US Capitol, but again smaller than current bills and surrounded by scrollwork.

The colors are green and black, unlike current bills that are red, white, blue, and green.
