His sudden death was obviously the greatest source of turmoil for his administration. Other than that, the big issue was whether to allow slavery in the territory recently annexed from Mexico and what policy to follow regarding slavery in new states that might be added out of this new territory in the future. Taylor was a slave-owner and most people assumed he would favor the expansion of slavery even though he did not say so during the campaign, but after he became president he favored adding California to the union as a free state but rejected the concessions to the South that what became known as the Compromise of 1859 proposed. He was also strongly opposed to the right of secession.
