What is meant by the president's honeymoon period?

Generally when a newly elected president takes office the opposing party will not be politically critical of him or her for about 100 days. This is the so-called "honeymoon period". There is no law mandating it; this is just a custom or courtesy that has developed over our history.

The Honeymoon is a metaphor for the period in a Presidency that occurs when they are first elected. It is not an actual period of time and for some Presidents it is represented by manner of the media's coverage and for others the relationships with other politicians. Much like during a marriage when the couple first discovers problems and troubles that need to be faced will have people exclaim the honeymoon is over.
