James Madison was born March 16, 1751 and died June 28, 1836. He was the main

author of the Constitution and over a third of the "Federalist Papers" which are still the

best commentary on the Constitution. Madison was completely responsible for the "Bill

of Rights" and strongly believed that the government needed 'checks and balances'. He was also the co-founder along with Thomas Jefferson of the Democratic Party (Ironically called in those days the Republican Party).

Madison was one of twelve children in a wealthy Virginia slave-owning family. He was the shortest President ever at 5'4 and the lightest President, weighing in at around 100 pounds. Madison was a passionate advocate of equal rights, and of the right of the individual citizen to have a say in how their country was run
