At least two nations, Brazil and Mexico, directly elect their president. Many people think the president is directly elected in the United States, but that is not true. While the people vote on the president, he or she is ultimately elected by the electoral college.
Because the people are concerned about the business practices. And if the people are concerned about it, then the President should be too, otherwise he/she won't get reelected. Also, business drives the nations economy.
Many people have met President Obama. From the homeless to the leaders of nations. Many different social classes and people of different religions or ethnicities have met Barak Obama. It cannot be counted how many people have actually met the him.
A person's attitude determines whether adversity causes harm or makes them stronger. Adversity can help people to become more determined and resourceful than those who have had an easy life.

It's similar to saying, "Fire forged friends." People who face tough times together tend to bond over that shared adversity.
Virtually everything a president does can be justified by this vague phrase, as interpreted by the president. I do not think any president every took any official action which he claimed was not a need of the nation or else something that the people were mandating.
