Before he became the 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower had a distinguished career in the United States Army and obtained the rank of a five-star general. He fought in both World War I and World War II. During World War I, he served with General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines and helped the Filipino government develop their army after the World War I ended.

During World War II, he was appointed Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces (SHAEF). He was instrumental in planning and executing the famous Normandy landings, later known as D-Day. He was promoted to the rank of General on December 20, 1944, for his exemplary leadership during WWII.

After World War II, Eisenhower was appointed Military Governor of the U.S. Occupation Zone, which consisted of various areas in Southern and Northern Germany. In 1945, he became Chief of Staff of the Army. From 1948 to 1953, he was the President of Columbia University. During this time, he also became the first Supreme Commander of the North Atlantic Organization (NATO).

He was President of the United States from January 1953 to January 1961.
