He served in briefly in both houses of Congress. He was a superior court judge for a time.

However, his big claim to fame was as a war hero. He won the Battle of New Orleans

in which his army lost only 21 men when inflicting over 2000 causalities on the British.

This victory, which occurred in 1815, made Jackson a national hero, propelling him into the

national limelight. There was some movement to run in for President in 1816,and he and his wife visited Washington. He was given a hero's welcome there, as well as everywhere along the way. He visited Virginia and Jefferson rode some 90 miles to meet him. However, he deferred

to Monroe until Monroe completed two terms, becoming a candidate himself in 1824.
