His biggest failure was to supervise the appalling mix-up at the Battle of the Crater (Petersburg) - the blame lying equally between him and George Meade, and definitely not poor old Burnside who got stuck with it.

He is also judged to have underestimated the calibre of George Thomas 'Rock of Chickamauga'.

Grant said his most grievious error was the assaults made on Lee's formidable entrenchments at Cold Harbor, Virginia, in 1864. He lost nearly 2000 men killed in this battle, as opposed to Lee's 83 killed.
