WWII. The USN had to provide protection and taxi service in the ETO (European Theater of Operations); but had to fight a Naval War in the PTO (Pacific Theater of Operations).

Another words, USN fleet carriers, fast battleships, Fletcher destroyers, and heavy cruisers had to battle their counterparts in the Pacific; while providing smaller Jeep carriers, old battleships, and old destroyers & cruisers for Atlantic duties during the war. Added all together, WWII was a tough one for the USN. More US Sailors and more US warships were destroyed during WWII than all the US wars put together.
