Emil Schalk had immigrated to the US from Germany just as the US Civil War began. For the most part he was an unknown writer that had ideas on how best to end the US Civil War. His popularity spread and he had supporters as well as people who disagreed with his ideas. Scalk became popular enough to have President Lincoln read his book on military strategies to end the war quickly. Schalk rested his way to end the war along three lines of thought:

1. The concentration of total force on one part of the enemy's army, the weakest part is first;

2. Acting with deliberate speed and use surprise as a weapon in the upcoming battle; and

3. Divide the enemy's forces into three zones and attack each one, win the battle and move on to the next enemy zone.

Reportedly, Lincoln was given a copy of Schalk's book in 1862.
