African Americans were not first allowed to join the army due to them unable to bear arms, but after such great African American leaders such as Fredrick Douglas asked men to join and fight for there equal rights, and ensure full citizenship. A example of a important group who fought were known as the 54th Massachusetts's. This group had been formed after president Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in1863, which states that all African Americans were free in south states, but the border states. (the border states were states that did not secede or break away from the union and join the confederacy states). The African Americans that had been still in slavery helped the north because they had rebelled against the south owners by doing things such as working slowly, and breaking tools or equipment.
