The British set fire to the White House in 1814 during the War of 1812 while James Madison was the president. The fire gutted the building and it took about four years to rebuild it.

In 1929, when Herbert Hoover was President, there was a major fire in The West Wing that destroyed the oval office, but did not affect the main White House.
