Johnson was raised in Stonewall, Texas, in the Central Texas Hill Country, near the town of Johnson City, which was named after James Polk Johnson, a cousin of his father.

He later bought a ranch about five miles outside of Stonewall, then went to live there after his presidency ended.

Upon his death, he donated the ranch to The Public as a National Historical Park, with the stipulation that it also permanently remain a working cattle ranch.

Stonewall is located approximately 75 miles North of San Antonio, 65 miles West of Austin, and 15 miles West of Johnson City.
