His first job after college was as a radio announcer in Davenport Iowa. That led to work at sister station WHO in Des Moines. There he became the play-by-play announcer for the Chicago Cubs. Then he went to Hollywood to cover the Cubs at spring training, took a screen test and landed a long term contract with Warner Brothers studio. He had starring roles in several movies. He called into the Army, which hurt his career, acted in some more movies, got into TV work serving as an announcer/host and doing some acting. Finally he got into politics, first as president of the Screen Actors' Guild, then Governor of California, and finally, President of the United States.
