Every soldier enlisted in the US Army or any other branch of service is issued a weapon with only one exception Chaplin's (spiritual leaders or priests) which do not carry weapons. As far as being in the fight in a conventional war or on the front lines it can go all the way up to a O-7 Brigadier General but all persons enlisted into the Army have a duty to their unit and country and protect their fellow Americans against all enemies both foreign and domestic regardless of rank.
