1824 was the one election in which no candidate got a majority of electoral vote, so that the House of Representatives decided the election as mandated by the Constitution. After extensive debate and what seemed like a deal, they elected John Quincy Adams president. The supposed deal was that Henry Clay, who was fourth and so not considered by the House, got the states he won to vote for Adams. In exchange, he was appointed Secretary of State, which at that time was a stepping stone to the presidency.
