In 1959, no one ran for President as it was an off-year for presidential elections in the United States. The next presidential election was held in 1960, when Richard Nixon ran as the Republican candidate and John F. Kennedy ran as the Democratic candidate.
the third party candidate for the 1960 election was Governor George Corley Wallace of Alabama
I don't think he was opposed to the idea but did not campaign for the job. He allowed his name to be placed in nomination for president at the convention in 1920 and later accepted the nomination as vice-presidential candidate. After he surprisingly became president, he agreed to run for another term. However, he did refuse to seek a third term.
Officially, people who finish in second or third in the primaries don't win anything. However, these individuals are often picked to run with the winning candidate as vice-president.
Theodore Roosevelt was the Republican Party candidate in 1904 and the Progressive Party candidate in 1912. That was the last time the candidate of a party other than the Republican Party or the Democratic Party came in 2nd in a U. S. Presidential election.

Theodore Roosevelt lost his re-election to Woodrow Wilson in the 1912 presidential election. Roosevelt ran as a third party candidate under the Progressive Party, splitting the Republican vote and allowing Wilson to secure a victory.
The Republican candidate for president in 1920 was Warren G. Harding. Harding won that election by defeating Democrat James M. Cox. President Harding served as the 29th President from 1921 until his death on August 2, 1923.
