The fifth U.S. President was James Monroe. The fourth President from Virginia, Monroe was elected in 1816 and 1820 and served from 4 March 1817 until 3 March 1825. His re-election in 1820 was the last time someone ran for U.S. President unopposed. His running mate in both elections, sixth Vice President Daniel D. Tompkins, was the only person to serve two full terms as U.S. Vice President during the 19th century.
