In effect, no-one "won" the 2010 Australian Federal election. The result, however, was a Labor minority government.

After the nation waited for seventeen days in limbo for a result either way, on 7 September the three key Independent members whose support was needed for either major party to form government, announced who they would support.

Independent Bob Katter, whose electorate of Kennedy covers most of north Queensland, announced he would back the Coalition, led by Tony Abbott. The other two Independents, Rob Oakeshott (Lyne) and Tony Windsor (New England) chose to back a Labor minority government led by Julia Gillard.
