The name "possum" is often applied (colloquially) to the "opossum" of North America, which is spelled differently because it is not the same animal.
There are two distinct related orders of marsupial animals:
possums - (suborder Phalangeriformes) native to Australia, New Guinea, and Indonesia
opossums -(order Didelphimorphia) native to North and Central America
The word opossum derives from the Algonquian "aposoum." Its initial vowel became silent in informal speech ( and disappeared from informal spelling ) in the 19th Century, but is always pronounced in formal speech.
During a speech you would say "an Opossum" because the "O" is NOT silent. It's a common mistake thinking that the O is silent. Possum would be referring to many different species in Australia when the Opossum is native to America. So be sure to pronounce the O and to use an before it.
Opossum Rat
The correct pronunciation is "possum" the "o" is slient.
This appears to be a typo of the word "opossum" (North American marsupial).
