Comes from a couple hundred years ago when forces would leave the fort for patrols and take jacket off (when boss wasn't around) -- and they put the jacket in a saddle bag. When they came back to the fort, they would put the jacket back on -- but the pants became slightly faded due to the sun (compared to the unexposed jacket)

* Unless the bride to be has printed 'casual' on her invitations (example: garden wedding with BBQ to follow) then no, all weddings, no matter what time of the day or evening are generally formal weddings and one should dress to fit the occasion. For the men it could be a pair of nice dress slacks, belt, shirt and tie and a sports jacket. For the women it can be dress slacks, nice top and a jacket (or no jacket) to a skirt or dress.
Semi formal wear can mean anything from a woman wearing slacks and a blouse; skirt and blouse and flat shoes if she prefers to men wearing a sports jacket with either a shirt and tie or a shirt open at the neck and slacks to slacks and a shirt or slacks and a sweater.

This may be an unpopular answer for some people, but the number ONE most world-wide recognized uniform is the U.S. Navy enlisted Dress Whites and Dress Blues ("crackerjacks"). Much of the reasoning is the U.S. Navy presence throughout the world, that is an advantage over other countries and other U.S. branches of military. The Marine Corps dress blues are most likely in your "top 5" HOWEVER...to the untrained eye, many civilians confuse Marine Corps and Army service and dress uniforms as they are (again, to the untrained eye) similar in appearance. Marine and Army service uniforms both include green slacks/trousers. Marine and Army dress blues both have blue trousers with single stripes down each side WITH a black jacket with trim around the edges. Conversely, with the U.S. Navy there is no mistaking the bell bottom trousers with flab on the back, "dixie cup" hat and chevron with crow on the left sleeve. Some dress slacks are wrinkle free and do not need to be ironed.
Yes, an enlisted Marine Reserve can be buried in dress blues if it is the request of the deceased or their family. However, it is ultimately up to the family's preferences and any specific instructions or traditions they may have.
