As much as most of us hate paying taxes of any sort, they are an absolute necessary evil if we are to live in a society which demands certain services such as waste collection and disposal, utility services, public Swimming Pools and libraries, community and state colleges and universities, paved streets and highways - just about any agency or entity which serves the public and provides (through taxes) the necessities and more I've listed here. Thanks to taxes, in many areas they are the reason why the USA still has the highest standard of any nation on the globe or that has ever existed. Overall the above is a fine answer...except that to be certain, under almost all studies, the US does not have the highest standard of living (and most other standards), in the world...it also doesn't have the highest tax rate (by far). Interestingly, many of the Scandanavian countries (socialized this and that, huge tax rate), do.
