In the early 1800s, at the time of the Louisiana Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the famous "Lewis & Clark" expedition for the purposes of discovering a passage to the Pacific Ocean, gaining knowledge about the Native populations in the territory, assessing the influence of Europeans in the area, and getting an initial inventory of the territory's resources. All of this was sought through Lewis (and Clark) for the sake of planning American administration and settling of the large, rich, yet mysterious new property.
