No they didn't. The rebels were perceived as disloyal to the Crown. Probably the majority of "British Colonists" were loyal to George 111 and the British Parliament. It was inconceivable that the rebellion in "The America's" would escalate into what was effectively an overseas British Civil war, both sides using European soldiers of fortune. Perhaps The War of Independence was Britain's Vietnam?
