The North had a higher population. In the South a lot of the people lived on huge plantations, they were like a city in itself. Most people in the South lived very far apart from each other. The North, on the other hand, was densely populated with huge cities. Unlike the South, they didn't rely on agriculture, but industrialism. Which is a huge advantage that they had during the Civil War.
The only real weakness IN THE BEGINNING of the war was the North's leadership. The North had the bigger population of males, a bigger navy, and quite obviously to anyone who could read and write (in those days)...the North had a giant of industrial might, when compared to the agricultural South.
