The great plains was not always ideal for agriculture. The weather was a problem and the flat lands made it vulnerable to attacks by natives.
The Great Plains
Because the Indians lived in the great, big plains.
they lived in the great plains along the Missouri river
Blacks/African Americans migrated to the Great Plains for several reasons. Congress passed a wide variety of land acts to help attract settlers to the Great Plains. The 1862 Homestead Act opened up opportunities for African Americans by offering them land at little or no cost. Advertisements, newspaper articles, letters, and encouragement from black and white leaders enticed the African Americans to move to the Great Plains. Another reason was that the conditions in the south were dire with increased racial violence, disfranchisement, loss of civil rights, and lack of economic opportunity for southern blacks. Many found homesteading on the plains difficult or had been led west by rumors that didn't live up to expectations, such as free passage and free land, but they stayed because it was better than returning to the south.
By the time there was anyone settling the Great Plains in the 1800's few were European immigrants. The settlement of the plains came as small homesteads and farms. The plains still exist as it did over a 100 years ago. Great expanses of grasslands still exist and the ruts of covered wagon wheels can still be seen. Most of the people were heading to California , Oregon, or Washington instead of staying in the plains area. Life in,the plains was hard with no trees, little water, and the weather could range from hot days to blizzards.

The temperatures were very hot in the summer and freezing on the winter. Fires, tornadoes, and other extreme weather was common. Crops were difficult to grow due to the lack of water, the regularity of stampedes crushing crops, and also because the soil was not great for growing crops. The amount of land allotted to each person was minimal by the Homesteading Act, so farmers did not have a lot of land to begin with. Sod houses were good to live in, but snakes, rats, and mice usually lived in the dark corners.
