In 1492, Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, embarked on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean under the sponsorship of the Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. Columbus' expedition led to the European discovery and exploration of the Americas, although it is important to note that indigenous peoples had been living in the Americas for thousands of years prior. Columbus' arrival marked the beginning of European colonization and the subsequent impact on the indigenous populations and the environment of the Americas.

Several explorers came to America in search of wealth, including Christopher Columbus, who sought a westward route to Asia and discovered the Caribbean in 1492. Hernán Cortés explored Mexico and conquered the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century, while Francisco Pizarro did the same with the Inca Empire in South America. Other notable figures include John Cabot, who explored parts of North America for England, and Jacques Cartier, who sought riches in the St. Lawrence River region for France.
Christopher Columbus is generally credited with discovering America in 1492. It was his voyages that began the European expansion into and control over the American continents.
While the "Native Americans," the Norse, the Chinese and perhaps others discovered America earlier, the discovery by Columbus in 1492 is considered the "official" date of discovery becasue that is the discovery from which the modern world descends.

1492 is the year that Columbus came to America. He did not "discover" America as has been stated in the past. There were Native Americans inhabiting the country, and other white men had explored the Americas before Columbus. However, Columbus' voyage to America led to lasting European contact with America.
Christopher Columbus, sailing for Spain, explored the Island of Hispaniola. He was the first European to reach that island in October of 1492.
Christopher Columbus not only explored Cuba, but he originally founded Cuba. He did this during his voyage in the year of 1492.
