You have to determine which design you have and then look for a mint mark, if there is one. The following letters have been used on US silver dollars:

Mint mark positions are:

  • All types up to 1803 - no mint mark; all struck at Philadelphia
  • Seated Liberty type, 1836 to 1873 - under the eagle
  • Morgan type, 1878 to 1921 - above the "DO" in DOLLAR
  • Peace type, 1921 to 1935 - between the word ONE and the eagle's tail

On modern non-silver $1 coins, Philadelphia began using a "P" mint mark in 1979. Positions are:

  • Eisenhower type, 1971 to 1978 - above the date
  • Anthony type, 1979 to 1999 - to the left of Ms. Anthony's collar
  • Sacajawea type, 2000 to 2008 - under the date
  • Presidential type, 2007 and later - on the coin's edge
  • Sacajawea type, 2009 and later - on the coin's edge
