Actually, I don't think it prepared them, but it did make them want to go. They wrote a book about their 2 year trip that was very popular. In reading the accounts of the western movement it seems that many of the families going west were not prepared. They carried furniture and other items in the wagons they didn't need. The trails were littered furniture and graves. One story tells of a family with six children from a newborn to ages 12 years old that arrived in Oregon with nothing. The father had died, the wagon had gone over a cliff, and they were in rags by the time they got to an apple orchard in Oregon. This was the story of many people.
