A lot of the people who had emigrated from Europe to what became the US had done so for very good reasons of not liking where they were and wanting to start a new life in the New World. The Irish Emigrants certainly had good reason to dislike the British, by which I primarily mean the English. The nature of patriotism is a belief in your country, and though a few of the settlers were loyal to the Crown & King George III, most saw the US, as it became, as a new, young , inspiring country. The desire to cut the ties to the Old World must have been very strong indeed. Now, about these taxes..............
