Cotton was America's biggest export. It needed slave labour to harvest the crop economically. So it was simply not feasible to abolish the institution.

Planters argued that the slaves were much better-off in America than they would have been in Africa.

As the debate heated-up through the 1850's, Southern leaders put pressure on church ministers to preach that slavery was a perfect God-given arrangement of man and master.

Robert E. Lee actually declared that slavery was an evil that the Almighty would eradicate when He saw fit.
