The European countries that colonized Africa were similar to the regimes that had earlier colonized the Mediterranean coasts, but more widespread and more successful thanks to the advancements of 19th century technology. The colonies provided vast new quantities of raw materials that were scarce or unavailable in Europe, and provided new markets for manufactured goods among the populations there. Along with the lands, there were natives who could be pressed into service to find and exploit these resources, a ready source of cheap unskilled labor.

The locations of the colonies also expanded naval control over shipping and trade routes, something that Europe had continually warred over from the 15th to the 18th century.
