The Indians practiced communal land ownership. That is, the entire community owned the land upon which it lived, however; the Native Americans did not really believe in "owning" land they had the concept "you own it while you live on it" after that it was considered free game.

The American Indian belief was that land could never be owned.The white's believed that land could be bought and sold and as long as you had a contract to prove you owned a block of land or a house then that was youres.

Native Americans didn't look at land as something to be owned. Rather, the land was to be cared for and used by all. Europeans took an opposite view. The land belonged to the monarch of the country they came from and it was his to distribute however he wished.

The subject of private ownership and Capitalism had taken hold in Europe. The Native Americans still looked at themselves as part of the land, the land was something that was owned by no one.
