the new England colonies
Colonists spent most of their day trying to survive in their new land. Men would spend their day farming. Women would spend their day preparing for the meals and making things that they would need.
They were located on the coast and close to a harbor. There was an abundant supply of lumber and other natural resources. There was ship building expertise amonf the inhabitants. There was also a need for ships - this is an early example of capitalism.
commerce, handcrafts and farming
Colonists found that many places were suitable for farming. By the 1750s, there were some farmers in Massachusetts, but the vast majority settled in the southern or Middle-Atlantic region, especially in Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, and Georgia.

The geography of England posed challenges for colonists attempting to farm due to its hilly terrain, limited arable land, and unpredictable weather conditions. These factors made it difficult to cultivate crops and sustain agriculture on a large scale, leading colonists to adopt alternative methods of subsistence such as hunting, fishing, and trade to supplement their food supply.
The New England Colonies had a much harsher climate and geography for colonists to work with than did the colonists in the Southern Colonies. Fishing and farming communities stayed along the rivers. Lumber, furs, whaling, and other maritime activities provided sources of income for colonists.
The New England colonies had a lot of rocky soil, which made farming challenging for the new colonists. As far as climate, the colonies in New England experienced cold winters, and humid and hot summers.
The weather is what made farming in New England difficult. Winters are harsh, and the growing season is short.

much of New England is made up of hills and low mountains, large areas are covered by forests, and the soil is thin and rocky, which makes farming difficult.

It wasn't good for farming. That is why it turned to building ships, shipping and marine manufacturing.
