There were about 10 million natives that inhabited North American in 1492. There is no estimate as to how many individual Native American groups there were because there were no political organization associated with true tribes.

There are 5 Indian tribes in the U.S.

1. Inuit: in Alaska

2. Iroquois: near the Atlantic also know as the eastern woodlands

3. Pueblo: near Arizona and New Mexico

4. Sioux(Lakota): in the great plains (near the Great Lakes)

5. Kwakiutl: in the pacific northwest

Officially there are 566 recognized tribes in the United States; although there are a few thousand that are not officially recognized.

There really is not a answer because alot of indians were in the tribes like 2.3 million according to U.S Census estimates for 1997.
