The Union (north of the United States) was in war with the Confederates (south of the United States. The Union tried to starve the south out by making a blockade. The way the south stopped it was by putting iron on its ships and shooting cannons at the other ships.

Not all ships were from the English. Ships came from all over the world from different countries with people who spoke different languages.
It is estimated that about 22 Union ships were sunk by Confederate torpedoes. There were also about 12 ships that were seriously damaged by torpedoes.

The union had many trains, ships, and good roads. The Confederates had few trains, few ships, and not so good roads.
Many dozens. In addition to the Naval Ensigns, the Union flag and the flag of the King (this is why it was called a flag-carrier), all naval ships of this time carried signalling flags which could be used to communicate between ships of the fleet.
They really developed the Iron Clads, the forerunners of the modern ships with armored sides. Submarines were also experimented with, the Confederates having a submarine that successfully attacked a Union ship, but then sank with all hands.

They are allowed on all of them. They currently serve on all but the smallest ships that do not have accomodations for them such as Frigates.

Ships of the United Kingdom will fly under the Union 'Jack' (Union Flag) along with a 'Red Duster' (Red Ensign). Also, ships of other British Sovereign Territories (ex-empire) eg. Bermuda, Bahamas will also use the Union 'Jack' as well as their own flag.
To stop them exporting their cotton in exchange for war-supplies.
