What you are referring to is the 1924 Peace dollar. It is not misspelled! It simply uses the Latin alphabet where the "U" is the same character as the "V" today. PLEASE use the Search function on this site to find the many other similar postings. It is not an error, it is the result of the artist using the Latin alphabet that did not have the letter U (or J, for that matter). Quarters from the same time period have similar styling.
