If the coin is about the size of a quarter and has a picture of the Statue of Liberty on the back, it's not from 1817 and it's not gold. It IS a dollar though. It's one of the new $1 coins issued as part of the Presidential dollars series.

These coins are made of brass and have the minting date inscribed on the coin's edge. "1817" is part of the dates served by the president depicted on the coin, either James Madison (1809-1817) or James Monroe (1817-1825). Hundreds of millions have been minted so they're neither rare nor valuable. Go ahead and spend it.
