Calhoun is a corruption of Colquhoun which is an earlier corruption of Conachon Which was a royal family of Ireland and when his son moved to Scotland it became Colquhoun. So when it was further corrupted it became Calhoun making it Scotish in origin. It has been adopted by the Irish though. If you are referring to towns and streets named after ex-vice president John C. Calhoun that Calhoun is German in origin as it was changed from a K to a C when they migrated to America.
