Ralph Lane abandoned the Roanoke colony in 1586 due to lack of supplies and tensions with the local Native American tribes. He decided to return to England to seek assistance and supplies for the struggling colony.
The Ralph Lane Colony, established in 1585 on Roanoke Island, failed primarily due to poor leadership and lack of adequate supplies. Ralph Lane's aggressive relations with local Indigenous tribes led to hostilities, which further strained resources. Additionally, the colony was not self-sufficient, and after a year of dwindling food supplies and rising tensions, Lane abandoned the settlement and returned to England for reinforcements, leaving the colony to collapse. Ultimately, the combination of harsh conditions, conflict, and mismanagement led to its failure.
Ralph Lane was an English explorer who was unsuccessful at establishing a colony. He attempted to colonize Roanoke Island in 1585.
Ralph Lane died in 1603.

Ralph Lane's 1586 Discourse on the First Colony: The Renaissance Commercial Report as ApologiaMichael G. Moran‌University of GeorgiaIn 1584 Sir Walter Raleigh received from Queen Elizabeth a patent to colonize any region of North America not possessed by a Christian prince. In 1585 he sent a fleet of seven ships to plant a colony under the governorship of Ralph Lane on Roanoke Island near what is now the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The colony lasted less than a year and then returned to England, where Lane produced a commercial report explaining the failure. Using research from speech communication on the rhetoric of apologia, this essay analyzes Lane's attempts to answer four criticisms of his governorship: that he mistreated the Indians, that he failed to explore the region to find commodities valuable to Raleigh and his investors, that he was an incompetent military commander, and that he deserted the colony. The essay also evaluates Lane's recommendations that future colonies be established further north on the Chesapeake Bay.
The expedition to Roanoke Island in 1585 was led by Sir Ralph Lane, who was chosen by Sir Walter Raleigh to establish the first English colony in North America.
The leader of the Roanoke colony was John White, who served as governor. He left the colony to get supplies and when he returned, the colonists had mysteriously disappeared, leading to the unsolved mystery of the "Lost Colony."
