Neither. John Marshall was a member of the Federalist Party, which supported a strong central government, less autonomy for states, and rule by the wealthy elite. They strongly supported the US Constitution. Thomas Jefferson lead the opposing party, first called the Anti-Federalists, then the Democratic-Republicans. The Democratic-Republicans favored state sovereignty and the Bill of Rights.

Neither party was really analogous to the modern Democrats or Republicans.
