Because the plantations in the south were more reliant on slave labor to produce crops, while in the north, they had little need for slaves due to the increased manufacturing in the north, plus, most northerners could not afford slaves

Kentucky was the last state to free its slaves legally. The other two border states had already radified amendments prior to Kentucky and the rest were freed through the emancipation proclimation. Kentucky was the only state to have its slaves legally released from bondage due to the federal governments passage of the 13th amendment.

Very few slaves fought for the South. That was a desperate last-minute plan by Davis and Lee, much too late to make a difference. The slaves that were liberated by the Union troops followed the armies North, and were given menial jobs around the camps. Eventually some of them were allowed into uniform.
